I was back in the DF one full day before I set off for a bit of traveling with a friend.
Our (ever evolving and slightly convoluted) itinerary: DF --> Morelia + butterfly sanctuary --> Patzcuaro + Janitzio --> (Uruapa) --> Zihuatanejo + Ixtapa --> Morelia --> Patzcuaro + Tzintzuntzan + Quiroga --> DF
Our first stop was Morelia -- the capital of Michoacán. Morelia was the first viceroy of Mexico, founded in 1541 under the name Valladolid. After Mexico's independence, the name was changed to Morelia in honor of the revolutionary hero José María Morelos, who was born there.
The historic downtown of Morelia is very pretty, built of stone and with a very geometrical layout (with many paths leading to a church/cross/chapel/etc). We found that the people in Morelia weren't quite as friendly (at least to tourists) as the other places we've been in Mexico. Don't get me wrong -- they weren't mean-- but not as welcoming and helpful. For example, we had multiple people walk right by us as we tried to ask for directions and when we asked at an information module about what we should see, the answer was limited to "the tour bus." Granted, I might just be spoiled by how friendly most people have been in the rest of my experiences here in Mexico.
We were in Morelia Tuesday afternoon/evening, Wednesday evening (butterfly tour during the day -- see later post) and Thursday morning to do the tour bus. Along with touring around, we also attempted (and failed) to go salsa dancing, went to a peña to listen to trova music, and tried tacos with carnitas, preparation of pork that Michoacán is known for.

Casa de Salsa. We almost went based on my tour book's recommendation, but the guy at the hotel said there were lots of prostitutes, so we decided against it. Multiple people later said they didn't know what he was talking about and it's a great place. |
