The Friday of our trip we did an all-day tour (6am - 9 or 10 pm) to see Agua Azul, Misol Ha and Palenque.
Our first stop was Agua Azul (blue water), named quite literally for its color.
interesting tree with both green and pink leaves |
Next, we went to Misol-Ha.
Our final stop of the day was Palenque, Mayan ruins that date back to 100 BC to its fall around 800 AD.
look closely and you can see Mayan writings |
The trip was broken up by stops on the way up, but was a 5-6 hour drive on the way back. It was pretty scenery through the mountains -- though very curvy roads with a ton of speed bumps. We drove through various Zapatista communities, marked with a red star. We enjoyed a pretty sunset during the drive back to San Cristobal.
